Google launched its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite on October 1, alongside more than 100 other spacecraft on a SpaceX Falcon 9. This week the first AI response came back from a data-center-class TPU in orbit. Engineers uplinked a prompt during a ground-station pass and asked the onboard Gemma 4 model for a haiku about being in space. As the satellite passed Svalbard, the poem came down.

Travis Beals, senior director for Paradigms of Intelligence, calls it the project’s “Hello World” milestone.
What is on board
Four Tensor Processing Units and up to one kilowatt of power. The TPU’s appetite is the bottleneck: according to TechCrunch, only one can be switched on at a time, for roughly 20 minutes, which complicates the already tricky business of space-to-ground communication. Commissioning — powering up the host and TPU trays, running early machine learning tests — took about three weeks.
After the haiku came limericks and, more usefully, prompts asking the satellite to report on the state of its own payload systems. A spokesperson told TechCrunch the satellite is operating nominally.
What the experiment actually turns on
The next tests measure how the chips hold up under thermal stress and radiation. Google has run its TPUs through particle accelerators on Earth, but an accelerator is not orbit. The worry is bit flips: a stored value changes, data gets corrupted, and no ordinary monitoring notices. Ground testing suggested the effect on inference workloads would be minimal.
If that holds, 2027 brings the next milestone: twin interconnected satellites.
A haiku is not a data center, but it is a date
Four weeks from launch to first answer. For something Google itself calls a cosmic moonshot, that is quick — and it moves the question. It is no longer whether a data-center chip can run inference in orbit. It is whether it can keep doing so before radiation wears it down. So far the satellite has delivered 20 minutes at a stretch. A data center needs years.
