On 22 October Anthropic made Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed) generally available. The name is a mouthful, the difference is not: this is the native Claude API, with Google Cloud as nothing more than the access layer.
Two paths, and they differ on data processing
Claude has been on Google Cloud for a while, but as a Google-operated offering. Now there are two paths side by side.
With the Anthropic managed offering, Anthropic runs the service and acts as the data processor. In return customers get the complete Claude Platform feature set, with new features and betas shipping the same day they go live natively. The Google managed offering stays the right choice for anyone who needs Google as the data processor, has strict regional data residency requirements, or wants Google’s own integrations such as Model Armor and Agent Engine.
Billing on the Anthropic offering runs through a single Google Cloud invoice, and Claude usage draws down your existing Google Cloud commitment. Access works through the IAM credentials you already manage. US and Global endpoints are available to start.
What comes with it
The list is long, and that is the point of the announcement. For agents: Claude Managed Agents (beta), code execution, computer use, Agent Skills and the advisor strategy (beta). For connecting things up: Files API, citations, web search and web fetch, plus the MCP connector (beta). For cost and speed: prompt caching and batch processing. The Claude Console comes along too.
On the model side you get Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, with new models shipping as they launch. Fast Mode for Opus 5.5 is generally available there as well: up to 2.5x faster output generation at $8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens.
Anthropic quotes two customers, and both give the same reason. CTO Arvind Sundararajan points to day-one access to new features. Maksim Gorev, Head of AI Engineering, names prompt caching as the thing that keeps their commerce agent Moby affordable at scale.
One note to read before you move
If you already have a discount, talk to your Anthropic or Google Cloud account executive before switching. Discounts cannot be applied retroactively to usage.
Both camps are now building into both clouds
A day earlier, OpenAI’s models arrived in the Google Cloud Model Garden. Google is now reselling access to the models of its two biggest rivals, and both give the same reason: the customers sit there with their budget and their access management, not with Anthropic.
The more interesting line for developers is the one about feature parity. On hyperscaler-operated variants, waiting for new betas was always the sore spot. Anthropic promising day zero moves the question from “which cloud” to “who processes the data” — and that is a question lawyers answer, not developers.
