Claude Desktop 3.1623.0 landed on October 20, bundling Claude Code 2.1.304. It is one of the heaviest releases in weeks, and the weight sits with the admin knobs rather than the features.
Storage: finally seeing where the disk went
Settings has a new Storage page. It shows how much disk space Claude is using and lets you clear it by removing inactive Cowork tasks and Code sessions. The low-disk warning opens it, and so does typing /storage in either Cowork or Code. Third-party deployments don’t have it yet.
The Windows floor also moves up, to Windows 10 version 2004, build 19041. PCs on anything older keep the build of Claude they already have, and the Microsoft Store version is unchanged. One small relief: the “Open external link” confirmation is gone for most links to other websites, except on third-party deployments.
SSH gets locked down in seven places at once
Seven changes in the Code section are marked breaking, and nearly all of them are SSH. sshHostAllowlist now covers a session’s jump hosts as well: every ProxyJump host, and the host in an ssh -W %h:%p command, has to appear on each list that is set, by its HostName. An empty or malformed list turns SSH off entirely.
On top of that: if the managed-settings file on the machine fails to load, no Code sessions start there until it is fixed. The local-session ban and the saved-SSH-password ban from the computer’s own managed settings now apply alongside the claude.ai admin rules. Sessions on macOS and Linux hosts refuse to start when the host can’t report a folder’s real location, which in practice means no symlinks in the path. And MCP servers from your desktop settings no longer launch on a remote host whose admin uses managed-mcp.json to allow only their own.
For Cowork: handing a design to Claude Code
The menu under a design’s name has a new entry, Hand off to Claude Code. It opens Claude Code with a prompt to build that design in your codebase, or just hands you the prompt to paste. Three fixes in the same section are ones you’d have noticed: global instructions sometimes reverted to an older version, recently opened tasks disappeared after a restart, and the folder picker got stuck on “Couldn’t load.”
Managed installs also get releaseChannel. Set it to staggered and devices only move to releases Anthropic marks after a full rollout on stable, skipping everything in between.
This release was written for admins, not users
If you run Claude Desktop on your own, 3.1623.0 gives you Storage and a few fewer confirmation clicks. If you manage a fleet, it is the most important release since managed settings shipped: the local rules on the device now win in several cases, even where the claude.ai admin rules are more generous. Anyone maintaining both layers should check, before updating, that the stricter of the two is the one they actually meant.
