About a week ago, an entry named “Claude Honeycomb EAP” briefly showed up in Cursor’s model picker and vanished within hours. Ever since, the scene has been guessing whether that was the first glimpse of Opus 5. Now the guessing has a date attached — at least in the rumors.
What’s circulating right now
Community signals point to a launch window of July 20–21 — this weekend. The reported specs: a 1-million-token context window, capabilities closer to Fable 5 (on benchmarks, at least), and overall a bigger, stronger model than Opus 4.8. The Honeycomb entry in Cursor showed an “xhigh” reasoning mode and a safety fallback that routes sensitive prompts to Opus 4.8.
There’s even a single community benchmark from July 14 that puts Opus 5 ahead of OpenAI’s Sol and Terra on SWE-Bench Pro. And that’s exactly where the caution starts.
Why I’m writing this with the handbrake on
None of it is official. As of now there is no claude-opus-5 model ID in Anthropic’s docs, no price list, no system card, no benchmark numbers from the vendor itself. Anthropic has neither confirmed nor denied. The single benchmark is exactly that — a single source.
A model showing up wired into Cursor usually means availability is weeks away rather than months. But “usually” isn’t a schedule. Some leaked models ship in under two weeks, others sit in testing for a month or get renamed.
And the timing has a flavor to it: July 19 is the exact day Fable 5 drops out of the subscription plans. An Opus 5 launch right after would fit the picture nicely — maybe too nicely. Clean narratives like that are exactly the ones to stay skeptical about.
My take
I like these leak phases — and I distrust them at the same time. The truth is: Anthropic’s cadence has been high lately. Opus 4.8 in May, Fable 5 in June, Sonnet 5 at the end of June. The flagship Opus slot has been trailing by a step for weeks while OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 is already out. A counter makes strategic sense.
But I’ve seen too many “it’s coming this week” weekends pass quietly. If something actually lands this weekend, you’ll read it here. If not, it was a rumor with a nice date on it.
Short version: exciting, plausible, unconfirmed. Keep your eyes open — but don’t plan a migration around it yet.
