OpenAI is acquiring Pierre Computer Company. Pierre is the company behind Code Storage, a service that lets apps store code and track its history using Git, and behind a set of open-source developer tools. Two of them already ship inside the Codex app: Trees for file navigation, Diffs for reviewing changes.
OpenAI frames the deal around Git. The more work happens in parallel through agents, the more the systems around Git have to evolve. On Monday OpenAI had introduced Pando, its in-house source control backend for engineers and agents.
What Pierre built
Trees lets developers move through a project’s files quickly, Diffs shows what changed, and both are built for large volumes of code. Diffs also has an Edit mode, so a reviewer fixes a line right where they spot the problem instead of opening the file first. Pierre’s most recent release is Highlights, a syntax highlighter fast enough to keep up while a developer types or an agent streams code.
The same small team designed the API for Code Storage. OpenAI puts it in a line that sticks: the people who put an editor inside a diff also built the storage service.
What happens to the existing products
Pierre’s open-source projects stay open-source, and OpenAI says it will keep contributing to them. Customers can keep using Code Storage after closing while OpenAI folds its features into Codex. Closing is subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals, and until then the two companies stay separate. Nobody is naming a price; Axios, which OpenAI told first, says the terms weren’t disclosed.
Two acquisitions in one day, both aimed at agents
That same Tuesday, Meta acquired Conductor, a tool for running multiple coding agents in parallel. Axios lines the two up: Pierre stores and manages AI-generated code, Conductor coordinates the agents writing it. Add OpenAI’s June announcement that it planned to buy Ona, a startup for cloud coding environments and agent orchestration.
Here’s what strikes me: none of this is a model purchase. These are tools for the state afterward, when three agents are working on one repository and somebody has to decide which diff lands. Anthropic answers the same question inside its own product, through subagents, worktrees and permission modes in Claude Code. OpenAI and Meta are buying it instead. Which is why, for Claude Code users, the more relevant news from Tuesday is the other one: Conductor is shutting down.
