Mistral closed a €3 billion Series D on Tuesday, at a post-money valuation above €21 billion. The company calls it the largest equity round a European technology company has ever completed, and I can’t find anything that contradicts that.
Who’s in
Samsung Electronics led. Co-leads: the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and PSG Equity. New names include Advent, BlackRock funds, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing backers ASML, a16z, Bpifrance and Salesforce Ventures stayed on.
The money goes three ways: expand frontier research, scale compute for training, and grow infrastructure across the 20 countries Mistral now operates in.
The sentence that matters
Mistral positions itself as the only company building the full stack for sovereign AI — controllable models, private compute, production systems, with customers keeping control of their data and deployment. All of it resting on open-weight models.
That’s the interesting bit. Three billion euros is a lot of pressure, and the usual way to justify a number like that runs through closed models and API margin. Mistral is saying the opposite out loud. Whether it still holds two rounds from now is anyone’s guess, but the statement is unambiguous today.
A Samsung-led round also fits the picture in a way pure capital wouldn’t: devices, chips, and a distribution channel that doesn’t run through the US cloud axis.
Why I care
In Europe, Mistral is the only realistic option when a project can’t legally land at a US provider. That has usually meant a trade: sovereign, but weaker. This round, plus the open-weight commitment, shrinks the gap.
For anyone running models locally, the takeaway is simple. Europe’s most important supplier of open weights just got a lot of room to breathe.
