Alongside Claude Haiku 5.5, Anthropic changed two things on October 7 that have nothing to do with a new model: Sonnet 5.5 got cheaper to run, and subscribers get API credits.
Cache reads cost half
Prompt cache reads on Claude Sonnet 5.5 drop from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens. In pricing-table terms: 0.05x the base input price instead of 0.1x. Cache writes and every other price stay where they were.
That reads like a footnote, but it’s the line item that dominates an agent’s bill. Keep an agent working on the same context for hours and it reads that cache constantly. Anthropic puts the saving at around 20% for most agentic work.
$100, $200 or $500 a month
This week Anthropic is rolling out a monthly API credit for subscribers:
- Max 5x: $100 per month
- Max 20x: $200 per month
- Team: up to $500, pooled across the organization’s users
The credit applies on the Claude Platform and to any model. It’s meant for your own apps, agents and tools running against the API — exactly the work a chat subscription doesn’t cover.
It won’t appear on its own. You link a Claude Console organization, under Settings > Billing for Max and Organization settings > Billing for Team. The Help Center says the rollout takes a few days.
Computer use and browser use land in the SDKs
The Python and TypeScript SDKs now ship classes for the browser use and computer use tools, both in beta. You subclass one and write a method per tool against your own browser or desktop automation. The SDK then runs the tool loop, the URL and file policies you set for the browser, and your approval callback.
Anthropic points at Haiku 5.5 as the model for this. On computer use it scores 72.4% in OSWorld 2.1, at a fraction of what Sonnet costs.
The credit is a distribution channel
Anthropic is handing platform usage to people who already pay. The reason isn’t subtle: once your side project runs against the Claude API, you don’t port it somewhere else next month. The credit buys habit.
It’s still a good trade on your side. You pay nothing extra and get to build the thing that previously died on a cost question. You just have to go get it — no linked Console organization, no credit.
