Sometimes things shift not because of a new model, but because of a decision made somewhere else entirely. On June 8, Tim Cook took the WWDC stage as CEO for the last time — and almost in passing came an announcement that could matter more to Anthropic than any benchmark: Claude is now a selectable AI on the iPhone.
What Apple announced
Apple is rebuilding Siri from the ground up and introducing an Extensions system. For the first time, you get to decide which model sits behind Apple Intelligence: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Anthropic’s Claude. Gemini is the default, but Claude stands right next to it — on iPhone, iPad, and Mac running iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Each model keeps its own voice, so you always know who’s answering.
Until now, the only way to reach Claude was through Anthropic’s own apps and the API. Now it lives directly inside the operating system of one of the most-used devices on the planet.
Why this is such a big deal
Apple has roughly 2.2 billion active devices in circulation. Even if just five percent of iOS 27 users pick Claude as their assistant, that’s more than 100 million new Claude users — more than doubling today’s base. You can’t buy that kind of reach.
There’s a catch: the heavy lifting runs on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, not Anthropic’s infrastructure. So Anthropic doesn’t control the experience the way it does on Claude.ai or the API. The commercial terms — likely a revenue share per query or per active user — haven’t been disclosed by anyone involved.
My take
The timing is striking. Anthropic is in the middle of its IPO process, and suddenly a consumer channel reaching over two billion devices appears — starting in September with the iOS 27 rollout. For brand awareness, that’s a knighting.
Whether it moves revenue in the short term is another question. A rev-share that depends on how many people actively switch to Claude in settings is harder to model than an enterprise contract. But as a door into the world’s living rooms? Hard to overstate. I’m curious how many people deliberately make the switch — and whether Claude’s personality comes through on the iPhone the way it does in chat.
