It took a while. But things are finally moving.
The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) — a lobby group whose members include Nvidia, Amazon, Apple and Google — sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday. In it, the companies express their ‘concern’ over the designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk.
What the letter says
The core message: the designation threatens the government’s access to the best products and services from American companies. The letter specifically warns that the measure threatens ‘to undermine the government’s access to best-in-class products and services from American companies that serve all agencies and components of the federal government.’
That’s diplomatic language, but the direction is clear. If the government can ban a US company from its supply chain — not over technical failures, but over a contract dispute — then every tech provider is potentially at risk.
Why this matters
The letter is the first significant sign of industry solidarity with Anthropic. Until now, support had mostly come from tech workers in open letters. Having the industry heavyweights themselves take a position carries a different weight entirely.
Because in parallel, exactly what Anthropic warned about is happening: defense contractors are distancing themselves. According to CNBC, at least ten companies from venture capital firm J2 Ventures’ portfolio have stopped using Claude for defense purposes. Lockheed Martin is also reportedly removing Anthropic’s technology from its supply chain.
Between solidarity and self-interest
You have to put this in context, of course. The ITI members aren’t acting out of pure altruism. Nvidia, Amazon and Apple all have their own business relationships with the US government — and none of them wants to be the next one declared a security risk via tweet.
Still, the letter signals something important: the tech industry has understood that the Anthropic case is a precedent. If the government can punish a company for refusing to give up certain terms of use, no provider is safe.
For Anthropic, the letter is a small bright spot in a difficult week. Whether it changes anything remains to be seen.
