45 Billion for Compute: Anthropic's Mega-Deal With Nscale Right Before Its IPO

Copy article as Markdown

Anthropic is renting roughly $45 billion worth of compute from Nscale — 460 megawatts from a West Virginia data center running Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips. The deal is also a message to Wall Street.

It’s one of the largest infrastructure commitments AI has seen so far: Anthropic has agreed to pay roughly $45 billion to Nscale for cloud compute. Bloomberg and CNBC broke the story on August 26th, and the analysis has been rolling ever since — Forbes and TheStreet pulled the deal apart on August 28th. Nscale is a UK-based AI infrastructure company, and the contract runs six years. That averages out to about $7.5 billion a year.

What’s in the deal

Anthropic locks in roughly 460 megawatts of compute at Nscale’s Monarch campus in Mason County, West Virginia. For context: 460 megawatts is enough to power around 345,000 US homes at once, according to Bloomberg. It’ll run on Nvidia’s next chip generation, Vera Rubin. The data center isn’t expected to come online until late 2027.

One detail I find especially interesting: the Monarch campus generates its own electricity on site, with a gas microgrid. That means the capacity never has to join the overloaded queue for grid connections. Other new data centers wait years for that hookup — this one doesn’t. A real advantage, and part of why West Virginia is getting the project at all. Governor Morrisey’s AI strategy deliberately positioned the state for exactly these deals.

One piece of many

The Nscale contract doesn’t stand alone. Earlier in August, Anthropic had already committed $10 billion to the startup Volta for a data center in Norway. July brought a $5 billion deal with AMD, and back in May an arrangement with SpaceX for roughly $1.25 billion in capacity a month. Anthropic deliberately spreads its workload across Nvidia chips, AWS Trainium, and Google’s processors — so it doesn’t depend on any single vendor.

The timing is no accident. Anthropic is preparing to go public, in October, at a reported valuation of $2 trillion or more. That would be the largest IPO in history. And the first question Wall Street will ask is: can this company keep growing without running out of power and chips? The Nscale deal answers it before it’s even asked.

My take

The numbers are absurd — and they still follow a clear logic. Anthropic has admitted that demand for Claude strained its own systems at times. If you’re not buying compute years ahead today, you’re stuck without it tomorrow. The real bottleneck in AI isn’t the model anymore; it’s the power and the silicon behind it.

The open question is whether the math works out. $45 billion is a bet that demand won’t let up — stacked on top of an IPO story where Anthropic promises investors a total addressable market north of $30 trillion. Valuation expert Aswath Damodaran already calls estimates like that beyond plausible. The data center doesn’t switch on until late 2027, so until then Anthropic has to bridge the gap with Amazon, Google, and SpaceX. I find the strategy reasonable. But it also shows how much capital is riding on very few assumptions right now.
