The IPO everyone’s been speculating about for months is picking up speed. According to several reports, Anthropic plans to file its public S-1 with the SEC as soon as the end of August. That would take it from the confidential draft — which the company lodged with the regulator back in June — to a public process.
The number floating through the coverage is remarkable. The New York Times reports an IPO could value Anthropic at up to $2 trillion. For context: that would be the largest IPO on record, and more than double the $965 billion the Series H round closed at in the spring.
Not much is settled yet. Anthropic hasn’t named a share price, a share count or a listing date. The public S-1 would be the starting gun, not the finish line. After it come the SEC review, the roadshow and the actual pricing. If the timeline holds, a Nasdaq listing in the fourth quarter is plausible.
What I find most striking is the speed at which two truths overlap here. There’s a company that describes its own models as potential security risks and thinks out loud about the dangers of moving too fast on AI. And there’s a valuation that makes a mockery of any cautious restraint. Wanting to hit the brakes and flooring it at the same time — that’s the real balancing act.
For those of us watching, the move to public markets is a compelling moment all the same. A public company has to disclose its numbers: revenue, losses, compute costs, dependencies. For the first time we’d get a solid look behind the facade of one of the companies shaping the tools we use every day. The valuation is the headline — the S-1 will be the more interesting read.
