SAP has unveiled its vision of the ‘Autonomous Enterprise’ at the Sapphire conference — and Anthropic plays a central role. Claude is being embedded as the primary reasoning and agentic capability across SAP’s new Business AI Platform. This isn’t a minor integration partner deal. This is SAP saying: Claude will power the agents that help our customers do their work.

What SAP Announced

The new SAP Business AI Platform unifies the existing SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud, and SAP Business AI under one umbrella. On top of that sits the new Autonomous Suite — AI agents built into existing SAP business applications to automate end-to-end processes.

Claude powers the agents orchestrated through SAP’s own assistant, Joule. In practical terms: closing the books at quarter-end, answering complex employee leave questions, rerouting supplier orders mid-shipment — all coordinated across SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, and Ariba.

Why This Matters

SAP has hundreds of thousands of enterprise customers worldwide. Embedding Claude as the standard reasoning engine across that platform is a multiplier that’s hard to overstate. Until now, Anthropic has been landing individual enterprise deals — this is about a platform that could potentially bring Claude into every SAP installation.

The deal is strategically smart for SAP too. Instead of training their own foundation model (which they can’t and shouldn’t do), they’re bringing in the best available reasoning engine and building their agents on top of it.

My Take

This is one of the biggest enterprise deals Anthropic has ever done — arguably the largest after Google and Amazon. SAP dominates industries that other AI companies can barely reach: chemicals, manufacturing, public administration. If Claude works well there, it opens doors that no marketing campaign could break through.
