Microsoft Build 2026 kicks off tomorrow in San Francisco, and the most interesting announcement has already leaked: Microsoft is rolling out a full suite of homegrown AI models. Not OpenAI models. Their own.
What’s coming
Reuters and The Information reported the details in late May. Microsoft’s internal AI division MAI, led by Mustafa Suleyman, has built an entire model family: a coding model for GitHub Copilot, a reasoning model, a voice model (MAI-Voice 2), an image model (MAI-Image 2.5), and a transcription model (MAI-Transcribe 1.5). Plus a new in-house AI agent.
The real reason
Cybernews put it unusually bluntly: ‘The push reflects Microsoft’s effort to reduce dependence on OpenAI, whose partnership terms have been renegotiated, as rivals’ coding tools — notably Anthropic’s Claude Code — have pulled ahead.’
That’s the core of this story. GitHub Copilot dominated AI coding tools for years. It now writes 46 percent of all code on GitHub according to Microsoft’s own telemetry. But Claude Code has overtaken Copilot in enterprise developer adoption. Microsoft’s response: build your own models instead of relying on OpenAI and Anthropic.
What this means for developers
More competition in AI coding tools is good news for all of us. The key question is whether Microsoft’s MAI coding model can match Claude Code’s SWE-bench Pro score of 69.2%. We’ll find out starting tomorrow.
