Lovable, the fast-growing vibe-coding startup out of Stockholm, announced an expanded multi-year deal with Google Cloud on June 3. The headline number: a fivefold expansion of Lovable’s footprint on Google Cloud, including AI usage. Neither side disclosed a dollar figure — but the order of magnitude says enough.
The Actually Interesting Part
What makes me sit up here isn’t the cloud contract itself, but the model setup. As part of the deal, Lovable gets expanded access to both Anthropic’s Claude — the model that’s basically a default for coding tasks — and Google’s own Gemini models. So Google is selling cloud capacity and shipping its rival Anthropic right along with it. That’s the reality of today’s AI market: the hyperscalers make money on the infrastructure, no matter which model runs on top.
On top of that comes distribution through Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Gallery and an integration with Wiz for real-time security scanning of the generated code. That last point isn’t a nice-to-have for a tool that lets non-developers click together entire apps — it’s mandatory.
Why This Is Even News
Lovable isn’t a small experiment anymore. The company crossed $400 million in annualized revenue in February and added $100 million in a single month — with just 146 employees. You rarely see per-head numbers like that. When an outfit like that quintuples its infrastructure, it’s a concrete signal of demand for AI-assisted software building.
My Take
What I like about this story is how openly it shows the new game. Two years ago you’d have assumed: if Google sells you cloud, you get its own model too — exclusively. Today the answer is: take Gemini, take Claude, take both, as long as you run on our infrastructure. For startups like Lovable that’s a gift, because they can pick the best model per task instead of chaining themselves to one vendor. And for those of us using such tools, it means the question ‘which model is in there?’ increasingly gets answered with ‘depends on what you’re doing.’ That’s healthy.
