Google is working on a personal AI agent called Remy that aims to transform the Gemini app from a chatbot into a true assistant. That’s according to reports published on May 6.
What is Remy?
Remy is described internally as a ‘24/7 personal agent’ — an agent that works in the background for you, not just when you ask. It’s meant to integrate deeply with Google services, proactively monitor things you care about, handle complex tasks autonomously, and learn your preferences over time.
The greeting Google employees see in the test version: ‘What can I get done for you today?’ — not ‘How can I help you?’. The difference is subtle, but it reveals the direction: action, not just answers.
Current status
Remy is currently only being tested by Google employees in an internal version of the Gemini app. There’s no official timeline for a public release.
But: Google’s I/O conference is on May 19-20. That would be the obvious time for a public reveal — or at least a preview.
The bigger picture
What stands out: the entire industry is converging on the same goal right now. Anthropic has Managed Agents with Dreaming, OpenAI has its agent framework, and now Google with Remy. Everyone wants to make the leap from reactive chatbot to proactive agent — a system that doesn’t wait for your question but recognizes what needs to be done on its own.
The question is no longer whether, but who gets it right first for everyday use.
