Google launched Gemini Spark on Mac on July 1. The AI agent, unveiled at Google I/O in May as an “always-on assistant,” now runs natively on macOS — putting it in direct competition with Claude Desktop, Cowork, and Microsoft’s Copilot.
What Spark can do on Mac
Spark integrates into the existing Gemini desktop app and brings several new capabilities: real-time updates on topics you’re tracking, connections to Google Tasks and Google Keep, and the ability to work with local files on your machine. That last point is the key one — it turns Spark into a real desktop agent, not just a chat window.
Third-party apps
Spark now connects to external services: Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. You can reserve a table, order groceries, or kick off a flyer design through Spark. It’s reminiscent of the plugin strategy Anthropic pursues with Cowork — except Google is leaning into consumer apps rather than enterprise tools.
Availability
Gemini Spark for macOS is currently in beta and only available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US. Google hasn’t said when it’ll reach Europe or more affordable plans.
My take
The desktop agent market is heating up. Claude has a head start with Cowork for enterprise workflows, Copilot is deeply embedded in Microsoft 365, and now Google brings Spark to Mac. More competition is good for users — it drives faster innovation. What bugs me about Spark, though, is the AI Ultra restriction. That’s Google’s most expensive tier. Claude Desktop is significantly more accessible by comparison.
