Some announcements sound like a gift at first — until you do the math. Anthropic dropped exactly that kind of announcement for Claude Code on August 29.
The message on X: starting September 14, weekly standard limits in Claude Code go up permanently by 25%, for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. Until then, the current 50% boost stays in place. Nice picture on the surface: more limit, forever, for every paying customer.
The trouble is that the picture doesn’t match the reality you’re sitting in right now. Because at the moment there’s a temporary 50% bump running. If your original weekly limit was 100, today you have 150. On September 14 that boost expires, and the permanent 25% raise kicks in — leaving you with 125.
In plain terms: compared to the old baseline, you come out ahead. Compared to today, you come out behind. Roughly 17% less than what you have this week.
Anthropic then deleted the original thread and posted a clarification. This time without the gift wrap: “Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.” Alongside a promise to work on “exciting changes” with more visibility and control over your own usage — framed so that Claude feels like more, not less.
Worth keeping in mind: a weekly limit isn’t a fixed number of prompts. How fast you burn through it depends on conversation length, the model you pick, the tools you use and the effort level. A few long Opus sessions with lots of tool calls eat into your budget very differently than quick follow-up questions.
What bugs me here isn’t the number so much as the packaging. Communicating a plus that feels like a minus to your heaviest users — the community spots that instantly, and then the backlash is bigger than it needed to be. The deleted-and-corrected version reads more honestly in the end; it just came a step too late. I do give them credit for naming the reduction plainly. And the promised better visibility into your own usage is overdue anyway — anyone who leans on Claude Code wants to see where the budget goes before it’s gone.
