If you use Claude Code regularly and have been annoyed by hitting the rate limit window — good news. Anthropic announced major rate limit increases on May 6. And this time, it’s not a minor tweak.
What’s Changing
Three things, all effective immediately:
Claude Code’s five-hour rate limits are being doubled for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. If you’ve been running into walls after two hours of intense work, you now have significantly more room.
Peak-hour throttling for Pro and Max is gone entirely. This was one of the most frustrating aspects — getting throttled precisely when you’re trying to get work done during business hours. That’s over now.
API limits are getting a massive boost too. Tier-1 users see up to 1,500 percent more input tokens per minute and 900 percent more output tokens per minute. In concrete numbers: from 30,000 to 500,000 input tokens and from 8,000 to 80,000 output tokens per minute.
Where the Capacity Comes From
The short answer is the SpaceX deal. Anthropic now has access to over 300 megawatts of new compute capacity — more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs at the Colossus 1 data center. This capacity flows directly into higher limits for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers.
On top of that, Anthropic has several other recent compute deals: up to 5 GW with Amazon, 5 GW with Google and Broadcom, $30 billion in Azure capacity with Microsoft and NVIDIA, plus $50 billion for US AI infrastructure with Fluidstack.
What This Means in Practice
For developers who use Claude Code daily, this is a noticeable difference. Less waiting, fewer ‘rate limit reached’ messages, less friction. The removal of peak-hour throttling in particular was long overdue.
For API users on higher tiers, limits are also changing — check Anthropic’s updated documentation for the exact numbers.
The free plan stays the same. So if you’ve been on the fence about upgrading — now’s a pretty good time.
