On August 20, Anthropic introduced Claude Academy – a free place to learn how to actually use AI. Not exactly new ground; courses existed before. What’s new is the idea behind it: Anthropic teaches you the same thing it teaches its own employees on day one.
What’s inside
Around twenty courses, from the basics up to the API and Claude Code. Plus tutorials and use-case collections. You get recommendations based on your interests, you can track your progress, and you collect badges. Access is at academy.claude.com or via the “Learn more” tab in your Claude profile menu. If you want, you install the Claude Academy Skill and Claude suggests fitting courses for you.
At the center sits the 4D AI Fluency Framework – the same one Anthropic uses to onboard new hires. When should a task go to the AI, and when is it better left with you? Where does a model typically slip up, so you know what to watch for when you review its work?
Mindset beats prompt trick
The most interesting part isn’t in the features, it’s in the way of thinking. Anthropic deliberately stopped teaching specific tricks. Example: you used to have to tell Claude your text was meant “for colleagues in legal.” Now Claude just asks, if it needs that for a good result.
Instead of those little hacks, the Academy teaches mindsets that still hold when the models change again. Two of them stuck with me: “today’s AI is the worst AI you’ll ever use” and “verify in proportion to the stakes.” That second one is worth its weight in gold. Not everything needs triple-checking – but the higher the stakes, the closer you look.
More than the chat with the AI
One thing stands out: the Academy doesn’t only cover the actual chatting. It asks beforehand – which task are you delegating in the first place? And afterward – how do you honestly tell colleagues or customers where AI was involved? Plus a reminder to keep practicing skills yourself, so they don’t wither. You write the sensitive part of a memo yourself, and hand the summary to Claude.
My take
Sounds like marketing at first, but it’s less so than you’d think. Millions of people land on Anthropic’s pages every month to understand AI. A company that builds these models putting its own training material out in the open – I think that’s the right call. And the focus on mindset over tricks fits something I keep noticing here: the features change constantly, the way of thinking stays. Learn to verify in proportion to the stakes, and you’ll be fine with every new model.
