A Bitcoin miner turns landlord for data centers, and Anthropic is the tenant. On Monday, Riot Platforms disclosed a 20-year agreement: 191 megawatts of IT capacity from its Rockdale, Texas campus, going to a “leading frontier AI” company. It didn’t take long to figure out who that was – Anthropic.
The numbers
The base contract is worth roughly $9.1 billion and runs through June 2048. Two five-year extension options could push the total to $16.1 billion. Riot brings the capacity online in stages: 96 megawatts by December 2027, the full 191 megawatts by June 2028.
For a sense of scale: 191 megawatts is enough to power about 143,000 homes at any given moment. That power won’t be lighting living rooms – it’ll be feeding chips that train and run Claude.
Markets reacted fast. Riot’s stock jumped 25% after hours. For a company pivoting from mining digital coins to leasing AI infrastructure, an anchor tenant like this is worth its weight in gold.
The third deal in three months
The single contract matters less than the pattern behind it. This is Anthropic’s third major compute procurement in three months. Add them up, and the company now has more than $60 billion in commitments on the table. Just last week it was the in-house data center effort under the Theseus name, and now Riot lands on top.
The logic is simple: Anthropic’s revenue is growing faster than compute can be built. To keep pace at that speed, you have to lock in capacity years ahead – even where Bitcoin was being mined until recently.
My take
There’s something ironic about a crypto miner becoming an AI landlord. Both industries devour electricity, both need vast halls of hardware out in the Texas scrubland. The switch from one to the other is shorter than you’d think.
What interests me more is the direction this points. Compute is the bottleneck of this era, not the model itself. Anthropic is committing through 2048 – a longer horizon than most of us apply to our own careers. Nobody signs contracts like that betting on a short-lived hype. They’re planning for decades.
